I use and talk about a bullet journal quite often and I don’t think I’ve explained what it is. A bullet journal is like a planner and journal combined. It’s pretty much a book for all your thoughts and any tasks you need to complete. There really is no right or wrong way to do it. You can decorate, add pictures, washi tape, stickers, anything that reflects you.
Tools you need
The only thing you really need is a pen and notebook. There are two types of notebooks out there that are popular:
There are serious debates out there on which one of these are better. I just use a regular hardcover notebook I found at staples. I wanted to get one of the above but I couldn’t find any and I felt like I wanted to start right away instead of waiting for one to ship to me. I’m a little impatient.
There are also several popular brands of pens people use:
Staedtler Fineliners – These are fine tipped pens that come in many different colors. Good for daily use and color coding.
Goulet Fountain Pens – I haven’t personally used a fountain pen before but apparently they are all the rage in the bullet journal world.
Papermate Flair Markers – I use these. They are medium point and they don’t bleed through the paper.
Where do you begin?
Most people start out with a legend. On this page you can color code your tasks and if you decide to use symbols write there meanings. Here is mine:
After that you will want to start a table of contents. This will come in handy when you begin to fill up your journal with different spreads and lists. Typically I will start a lists and as things come to me add additional items. It makes it easier to find it if you have page numbers and a table of contents. Here is what mine looks like:
Now at this point you are free to move about as you please in your bullet journal. I usually start with a monthly spread to outline the month and then a two-page weekly spread for a more in-depth view of my weeks. Here are a few pics of mine:
Different Lists & Trackers
I use lists/collections and trackers so that I don’t forget things I want to do or progress I am making in different areas of my life. As I have mentioned before I like to track stuff. Here are a few examples of list you can make:
Book to read/ favorite books
Places I want to go
Movies to watch/favorite moves
The lists go on and on.
Here are a few websites that specialize in bullet journaling. I get great ideas from these. Especially when I was just starting out.
Boho Berry Shes awesome. I watched her videos as well as the link below when I was first starting.
I love the bullet journal because you can do whatever you want. You aren’t restricted and it’s not your typically planner. It is more like a place you put memories. It is a reflection of you at this particular moment in your life. Once you are done with the journal you should keep it and start a new one. Now you can look back and see what you were doing on a particular day or what you were interested in at that time in your life. I think that’s pretty neat. Do any of you have a bullet journal? Will you start one now?
